Pocketing Your Watch

Pocket watches, unlike wristwatches, are worn without a strap and placed in a front pocket. They come with a chain that secures it to a belt loop or waistcoat. Pocket watches are analog-display watches in contrast to the many modern digital displays.

Pocket watches are usually secured by chains which are usually decorated. These chains are also called fobs. Unlike the wristwatch, pocket watches have hinged covers that remain closed until and unless you wish to know the time. This is to protect the face of the watch and the workings of the pocket watch. They usually have fasteners that goes through a buttonhole to attach them well. Reminds us of train conductors, doesnt it?

Pocket watches have been around for quite some time now. The first reference to a new pocket watches ever noted was in 1462 through a letter by Batholomew Manfredi, an Italian clocksmith, addressed to the Marchese di Manta. In the letter, the clocksmith was offering to make the Marchese a pocket clock that was better than the one owned by the Duke of Modena.

Pocket watches, which were then referred to as pocket clocks, appeared as spring-driven models in Italy by the end of the 1400s. Peter Heinlein, a German locksmith from Nuremberg started manufacturing pocket watches in 1510. Soon after that, the manufacture of pocket watches spread rapidly all over Europe.

There are now two common types of pocket watches. The first is open faced, with no cover, winding variety called a winding pocket watches . The latter is the covered version, with a hinged cover protecting its crystal and face. Since the pocket watchs separate second dial is usually placed close to six oclock, the pendant (also known as the stem of the open face pocket watch) is positioned at twelve oclock. The hunter stem then is at three oclock. Reading a pocket watch means you have to position the watch at a ninety-degree angle with the stem pointed to the right.

Todays pocket watches uses the quartz movement feature regardless of whether it is open-faced or the covered type.

Pocket watches are not as common today as it was before, but they are still existent, not just as time implements, but as upscale, elegant accessories. Pocket watches and pocket watch accessories make great gifts and are often given as retirement presents. Theyre excellent sentimental presents as their metal casings inside and out can easily be engraved with special messages of many characters.

Pocket watches come in all forms and styles: there are Swiss Army Pocket watches, ladies pendants, chronograph and traditional pocket watches. Any of them can make a great gift.
