A lot of people think that dog training from home takes a lot of time when the fact is that it does not take that much time at all. It does, however, take a lot of patience. Training opportunities are all around you and there’s no better place to begin than at home where the puppy is most comfortable. You will also find there is ample time to communicate with your dog while completing the tasks and activities of your daily life.

While Watching Television

While you’re watching television is a great time to train your dog the “stay” command by placing your dog in front of you, ordering him to stay while you get up, leaving the room and then returning to release the pooch from the command. This is a practical method that you can use to teach your dog a very basic command while not missing a second of “American Idol”.

Get the Mail

If you have to walk to the end of the driveway to get the mail this is a great opportunity for dog training from home. Practice the “stay” command again by placing your puppy at the door step while you walk to the mailbox. It is also possible to practice other basic commands while getting the mail, such as the ever popular “fetch” with the phone bill. This is a task that is a favorite of mine.

Yard Work

Doing yard work also opens up a good time for dog training from home. Practice the stay or “down” command while you do something in the yard. Train your puppy to sit and stay near the big pile of leaves, for example. A more advanced command would be to teach your dog to actually sweep the pile of leaves, but one thing at a time.

When Not To Train

There are, of course, times when you should not be dog training from home such as when you are sick or upset for any reason. You do not want to take anything out on the dog while they are learning basic commands as this will influence the “staying power” of those commands to a tremendous degree. Make sure that your communication with your best friend is as natural and uninfluenced as possible to ensure that the commands are being taught properly and that they are enforced on your puppy as clearly as possible.
